No-see-ums (biting midges) are tiny, 1/8-inch insects prevalent across Florida's beaches, marshes, and damp soil. They are notorious for their painful, highly itchy bites. Because they are too small to be seen and can slip through standard window screens, they are notoriously difficult to avoid without the right precautions. When and Where to Expect ThemPeak Times: Noseeums are most active at dawn, dusk, and on still, cloudy days. In Southwest Florida, peak breeding season occurs in March and April when wetlands have higher salinity, but they remain highly active in campgrounds like Sebastian Inlet State Park through the summer and fall. Habitats: They breed in brackish water, mud flats, and moist leaf litter. Popular coastal areas and coastal parks are prime environments for swarms. How to Protect YourselfBecause of their small size, standard mosquito repellents do not always work. To protect yourself: Repellents: Use a strong bug spray containing DEET or Picaridin. You can also try natural plant-based alternatives specifically formulated for biting midges, such as No No-See-Um Spray.Clothing: Cover up with long sleeves and pants, even during the summer months.Wind: Noseeums are weak flyers. Utilizing high-speed fans can easily blow them away from you on a patio or deck.

No-see-ums generally fly below 25 feet (about 7.5 meters) from the ground. Known as NO-SEE-UM screen, this fiberglass screen is a tightly woven 20×20 mesh designed to keep out most smaller flying insects like no-see-ums, gnats, sand flies, and other bugs that may inhabit marshy or coastal areas. While densely woven, this screening still allows good ventilation and visibility and provides some daytime privacy. Being this is a tight knit weave, water penetration is slower than usual and can cause "puddling or slow draining" on flat top sections of enclosures, which can result in material sagging over time.
